When you share your faith with unbelievers, does it feel like a burden—or a joy?
Witnessing for Christ can become a natural, enjoyable part of your daily walk, according to participants in BGEA’s Institutes for Emerging Evangelists.
“When Jesus saw the harvest fields, He didn’t say to pray for proclamation evangelists to come and start preaching. He said, ‘Everybody out there—you’ve got to go to your harvest fields.’ Wherever we are, we have to make sure we’re telling people about Jesus.”
—Ruth Rogers, Kidderminster, England
“Think of a courtroom. Not all of us are called to be lawyers to present a convincing case and argue a point. But we’re all called to be witnesses; we’re all called to share our stories.”
—Drew France, Liverpool, England
“God uses us just as we are. I play a bit of rugby. I don’t need to preach to the guys—I just need to be honest about where I go, what I do, what I believe. They ask; I don’t need to force any opportunities. Don’t pretend to be anybody you aren’t, just be open and honest.”
—Nick Blair, Edinburgh, Scotland
“I was having my hair cut. The guy asked if I was off work. I said, ‘No, I work for the church.’ We got into some major conversation and just talked about what the Lord had done in my life—and he was fascinated. Ask God for someone you want to have a good chat with and to give you an opportunity to speak to that person, naturally.”
—Tim Chilvers, London
“Pray that God would break your heart for the people you know who don’t know Jesus.”
—Naomi Hill, Cardiff, Wales
“When my sister had her first baby, I remember walking to church and wanting to tell everybody. I had this grin on my face, and I just wanted people to ask, ‘Why are you smiling?’ so I could tell them. Do we understand what the Gospel has done for us? We shouldn’t do evangelism out of guilt. We do evangelism because it’s the best news in the world. Some say, ‘When I’m a confident-enough Christian, then I’ll do evangelism.’ My point is that when you do evangelism, then you’ll be a confident-enough Christian.”
—Peter Chilvers, London
“Relax. Don’t turn yourself into a Robocop evangelist who makes ‘God statements.’ Link with people. You have to be natural, maybe even a little cheeky. Enjoy conversations with people. We live in a spiritual world where people are willing to talk about spiritual things. They get turned off by Bible-bashing. They get turned on by hearing about your story and your life.”
—Phil Collins, Stourbridge, England
“The starting point needs to be, ‘I’m really going to enjoy God.’ The more we enjoy God and find out who He is, then the desire to witness will come from there.”
—Nick Chatrath, Norwich, England
