Paul made an amazing prophecy regarding married life. He says he married “will affliction of the flesh” (1 Cor 7:28). If the warning from the Word of God that there is conflict in marriage is a war for which we advised prepare. Unfortunately many do not.
The relationship with God is the most important human beings. It depends not only on our salvation, but the values and principles that govern our lives. Thus the most important decision we can make is to continue to be faithful to God and his teachings. There is no better preparation for life to obey the Creator of life.
The second most important decision is who to marry me. Is that marriage is not a game, although many have started as if it were. Climbing a mountain without being prepared is a risky, but nothing more dangerous than marry without the necessary preparation. But believe me, take my position of director for a few months and hear the most horrific stories about the lack of preparation.
Marry without knowing the implications of such an important decision is an act of great irresponsibility, but the vast majority do so. I know that there is no pain greater than a lifetime to be part of a dysfunctional family, no more joy to have a huge family healthy. Read the rest of this entry »
Several years ago a submarine sank with its entire crew at the height of the Atlantic thing in North America. When at last the ship was found, divers were dispatched to assess damage and the possibility of rescuing the wreck.
When the divers approached the hull of the ship, were surprised by a knock in Morse code. It was obvious that someone was alive inside the submarine. The message was a question hopeless against the walls of the tomb of water: “Is there hope? Is there hope? ”
You and I are doing the same question when we face a particular problem or when a tragedy touches us closely. After all, who is completely free of the immense grief of losing a loved one, the frustration of unemployment, the anguish of a home vandalized or hundreds of other difficulties?
We feel trapped and submerged by the weight of circumstances and ask: “Is there hope? Is there really hope to solve this problem? ” Read the rest of this entry »

I love sports. One of the mementos I’ve saved from my childhood is a faded, slightly out of
focus black and white photo of me on my first soccer team. As a boy, I dreamed of winning the championship game with a spectacular last-second goal, and of becoming an instant hero to my teammates and everyone else watching.
In sports-crazy America, so many of our heroes are athletes. We identify with successful athletes because we, too, want to be winners. I will never be a gold-medal athlete, except in my imagination. When I watch an Olympic contest or professional game on TV, like everyone else I sometimes get mad and vent my feelings after a particularly lousy play. My wife says, “Why are you shouting? You certainly couldn’t do as well!” But in my mind I can play with the best of them. I’m a winner. Doesn’t everybody want to be winner? The only other options are mediocrity or failure. Adultery. Common word, common occurrence in our society.
Lt. Kelly Flinn narrowly avoided court-martial for adultery and insubordination. Gen. Joseph Ralston left the candidacy for the top military position when a previous affair spawned an uproar. Everyone–from presidents to preachers–is subject to the temptation.
But adultery’s stain goes deeper than the individual. More dishonor has come to the name of Jesus Christ by sexual sin than any other sin.
