For some years, I was fortunate that I was invited to preach in some meetings of the Sunday service Hispanic Crystal Cathedral in Los Angeles. There he met his host, the genial Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz. Perhaps the best preacher who has given much time in Latin America. His wisdom is intact, the gift of people remains the main adjective. His messages are so profound and devastating as they were in the tumultuous seventies, whose tapes were wanted as gold and copied in bulk rope, despite being proscribed by the traditional church of the time.
But their messages were not able to subjugate, but those who succeed in having intimate talks during my visits to his church, in the late nineties. Many were not, three to be exact. One in his office, another at a dinner at a seafood restaurant and the latest in a roast that the Juan Carlos I prepared for retirement at his home in the mountains of California. Everything an honor.
It would be impossible to transcribe the wisdom that this man comes in conversations that seem to arise as to neglect. But remember the three most valuable and important advice he could give me. In fact, I turned in my code of honor, my standard of integrity. Read the rest of this entry »

“Why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” -Luke 12:56

Easter weekend is hardly the time to write commentaries on Obama’s relationship with his pastor, or progress in Iraq, or the financial meltdown in America’s economy - there will be plenty of time for that sort of thing later.  This is the special time in the Christian calendar year when we Christians need to focus on the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and hear what God is saying to us about those world-changing events.

For the last 35 or 40 years I have read Oswald Chambers’ classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest every morning before I get out of bed.  This year Good Friday happened to fall on the day when the book offers some of Chambers’ thoughts on the Apostle Paul’s inspired statement of union with the Savior: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20).  It struck me that this was as appropriate a reading for Good Friday as one could hope to find, and the more I pondered it and prayed over it the more it seemed that I should write this week’s commentary on it, for in this one Bible verse the Holy Spirit gives us the essence of how we Christians should view our relationships with Jesus. Paul made an amazing prophecy regarding married life. He says he married “will affliction of the flesh” (1 Cor 7:28). If the warning from the Word of God that there is conflict in marriage is a war for which we advised prepare. Unfortunately many do not.
The relationship with God is the most important human beings. It depends not only on our salvation, but the values and principles that govern our lives. Thus the most important decision we can make is to continue to be faithful to God and his teachings. There is no better preparation for life to obey the Creator of life.
The second most important decision is who to marry me. Is that marriage is not a game, although many have started as if it were. Climbing a mountain without being prepared is a risky, but nothing more dangerous than marry without the necessary preparation. But believe me, take my position of director for a few months and hear the most horrific stories about the lack of preparation.
Marry without knowing the implications of such an important decision is an act of great irresponsibility, but the vast majority do so. I know that there is no pain greater than a lifetime to be part of a dysfunctional family, no more joy to have a huge family healthy. Read the rest of this entry »

4. He Forgives All Our Sins.

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us” (vv. 11-12).

Consider the greatness of God’s love. Astronomers tell us that the farthest known light source from the earth is ten billion light years away. That means that light starting from that source (a quasar) would take ten billion years traveling at the speed to light to arrive at the earth.  By contrast the nearest star is “only” four light years away from us. That’s four years traveling at the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles per second. Light from the sun reaches the earth in a little over eight minutes. Read the rest of this entry »

“He remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14).

Have you wondered what God really thinks about you?

Our greatest barrier to knowing God better may be how much we know about how much God knows about us. We struggle with God because we feel so bad about ourselves, and if we know the truth about ourselves, think of how much more God knows us!

We can’t fool him.

Sometimes we don’t want to pray or read the Bible or think about God because when we look in the mirror, we feel like saying, “You’re a big disappointment” or “You ought to be a lot better by now.” Read the rest of this entry »

January 6th, 2009Change Your World

Perhaps greater than any other time in history, we live in a world that is desperately crying out for help.

It’s a world where more than 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day…a world where diseases such as AIDS are taking the lives of young and old alike at an alarming rate…a world where nearly 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes every day.

We live in a world that needs Jesus.

And because we do, we are more passionate and committed than ever to help as many people as possible. Through Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries world missions, we want to relieve as much human suffering as we can with the time and resources available to us.

Is Missions Mentioned in the Bible?
We use the term missions quite a bit, but this word is never actually mentioned in the Bible.

Missions comes from a Medieval Latin word meaning “a task assigned; an act of sending.” And this is exactly what Jesus did before His ascension into heaven. Read the rest of this entry »

Read the rest of this entry »
